You're right in saying that it matters a lot in which industry you work, but also in what department. HR and Marketing, among others, I would think have a higher share of gays. And in terms of travel industry, there are quite a few 'mo's' in the company I work for, but that's also because it's an online travel company, which also helps in it being more liberal. In fact, they seem to really value diversity in all respects. I also agree that the more of us our 'out', the better.Girl, you work in the travel industry. I think you're out even if you're not shouting it from the rooftops. ;-)
Since I work in banking, which is traditionally more conservative, I do tend to hesitate around being out. And I hate it. Given that our recent elections just gave us three more states that now discriminate against gay people by prohibiting gay marriage, I think it's an important political act in the US to be as out as possible in the work place. But obviously this needs to be weighed against the perceived risks.
