I'm starting a new job soon and generally like to be 'out' at work. Not that I proclaim it to everyone who wants to listen, but tend to drop it into conversations like 'what did you over the weekend' in that I then would say 'me and my boyfriend went for dinner with friends'. Or something like that. But some friends of mine take a more careful stance and say it's better to avoid the subject when possible. I find that difficult. Plus from my personal experience: the less you make an issue of it, the more people accept it without problems.

I agree, but then again, it's kinda obvious that I'm gay anyway... still, I don't see any need to avoid it.

Girl, you work in the travel industry. I think you're out even if you're not shouting it from the rooftops. ;-)

Since I work in banking, which is traditionally more conservative, I do tend to hesitate around being out. And I hate it. Given that our recent elections just gave us three more states that now discriminate against gay people by prohibiting gay marriage, I think it's an important political act in the US to be as out as possible in the work place. But obviously this needs to be weighed against the perceived risks.

You're right in saying that it matters a lot in which industry you work, but also in what department. HR and Marketing, among others, I would think have a higher share of gays. And in terms of travel industry, there are quite a few 'mo's' in the company I work for, but that's also because it's an online travel company, which also helps in it being more liberal. In fact, they seem to really value diversity in all respects. I also agree that the more of us our 'out', the better.

hmm form my own experiences id say, if your asked dont lie!, its not like any one really needs to introduce them selves as "Hi, im blah blah, im gay.." usually the fact your gay will worm its way out at some time and it seems that this is the more accepted way seeing as most str8 peoples opinions are that thoes who shout about it may well be funny at times but usually are not as liked or given the chance to shine in others eyes as easily. This is the feed back i have received form my work colleagues as there i myself and another gay guy in our work place im quite laid back and honest and will answer a question honestly, the other guy is a total queen who seems to have a life mission in revealing all aobut him self from day 1, the girls and guys aorund the office have all commented on this difference and i have been given the opportunity to see what the othe rside thinks and feels on this issue.
