According to recent research by Norwich Union as covered on
MSNuk, 76% of men compared with just 24% of women are likely to suffer a midlife crisis, with the main concern being financial. Thirty, apparently, is now officially the age when the average (heterosexual) man starts to consider supporting (or indeed, already attempting to support) his own family and often the stress can become too much to handle. Comparing themselves to high flyers around them, or missing out on a promotion, are both common triggers for the fear of being ‘past it’, referred to in Norwich Union’s research. Now, this is probably slightly different for gay men, but approaching the big 4-0 myself, I do think there's some truth in this. For me, not so much on the financial side, but I'm definitely thinking 'what do I want to be doing with the second half of my life' more and more often.
